A full spectrum of pantaloons for the fairies in the school play, made from 2m of silk dupion each, about 70cm of 1" elastic for the waistband, and 50cm of 6mm elastic for the leg bands. I used bobinfill as thread and a size 9 needle so the silk didn't pucker. The material frayed a lot so I used french seams. The bands and hems were hand stitched. And here is the sexy pattern should you wish to recreate these babies!

I was given the second Famous Frocks book for Christmas and it's full of exciting looking dresses. The first dress I made, the Coco Channel Little Black Dress, was a real dud. I don't know if it was the pattern or the stretch fabric but it was unsalvagable. I was a little worried but the next dress I've tried, the Joan Crawford, has come out beautifully. The dress is made from stretch velvet, which is beautifully soft and very easy to sew and black/silver sequins around the middle and shoulders. It has a lovely cowl neckline. The great thing about this second book in the series, The Little Black Dress, is that the sizes of the patterns are much better. I am a size S/M rather than M/XL in the first book, whose patterns only went up to L anyway and so there was a lot of adjusting. They also seem to be longer. I added the customary 1" to the top and 2" to the skirt line but found myself cutting the 2" off again when I was hemming it. The downside to the new book is that it has fewer instructions and is definitely for the more advanced sewer: it took a lot of staring at the cowl to work out what was going on there! There was also a missing line somewhere in the instructions. I thought about lining the dress but the back of the stretch velvet was really slinky , so it wasn't going to stick to tights and the seams have ironed open very well so I was lazy. Materials Required: Ball point needle (very important) Black Thread 0.25m of sequined fabric (I now have lots left so expect many sparkles in the future) 3m of stretch velvet 22" invisible zip I had a lot of sequins and velvet left over so made a matching bag. Ready to look fabulous!
